{"id":246,"date":"2009-06-22T08:02:40","date_gmt":"2009-06-22T12:02:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kenotic.net\/?p=246"},"modified":"2018-08-29T14:34:33","modified_gmt":"2018-08-29T18:34:33","slug":"the-grain-of-sound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kenotic.net\/wordpress\/2009\/06\/22\/the-grain-of-sound\/","title":{"rendered":"The Grain of Sound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a poem I read yesterday that reminded me of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ronblock.com\/\">Ron Block<\/a>, the banjo player for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alisonkrauss.com\/\">Alison Krauss and Union Station<\/a> and a frequent poster \/ commentator over at <a href=\"http:\/\/rabbitroom.com\/\">The Rabbit Room<\/a>.  Thought I&#8217;d share:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The Grain of Sound<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A banjo maker in the mountains,<br \/>\nwhen looking out for wood to carve<br \/>\nan instrument, will walk among<br \/>\nthe trees and knock on trunks.  He&#8217;ll hit<br \/>\nthe bark and listen for a note.<br \/>\nA hickory makes the brightest sound;<br \/>\nthe poplar has a mellow ease.<br \/>\nBut only straightest grain will keep<br \/>\nthe purity of tone, the sought-<br \/>\nfor depth that makes the licks sparkle.<br \/>\nA banjo has a shining shiver.<br \/>\nIts twangs will glitter like the light<br \/>\non splashing water, even though<br \/>\nits face is just a drum of hide<br \/>\nof cow, or cat, or even skunk.<br \/>\nThe hide will magnify the note,<br \/>\nthe sad of honest pain, the chill<br \/>\nblood-song, lament, confession, haunt,<br \/>\nas tree will sing again from root<br \/>\nand vein and sap and twig in wind<br \/>\nand cat will moan as hand plucks nerve,<br \/>\npicks bone and skin and gut and pricks<br \/>\nthe heart as blood will answer blood<br \/>\nand love begins to knock along the grain.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8211; <\/em><em>Robert Morgan<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here&#8217;s a poem I read yesterday that reminded me of Ron Block, the banjo player for Alison Krauss and Union Station and a frequent poster \/ commentator over at The Rabbit Room.
