The Grain of Sound

Here’s a poem I read yesterday that reminded me of Ron Block, the banjo player for Alison Krauss and Union Station and a frequent poster / commentator over at The Rabbit Room. Thought I’d share:

The Grain of Sound

A banjo maker in the mountains,
when looking out for wood to carve
an instrument, will walk among
the trees and knock on trunks. He’ll hit
the bark and listen for a note.
A hickory makes the brightest sound;
the poplar has a mellow ease.
But only straightest grain will keep
the purity of tone, the sought-
for depth that makes the licks sparkle.
A banjo has a shining shiver.
Its twangs will glitter like the light
on splashing water, even though
its face is just a drum of hide
of cow, or cat, or even skunk.
The hide will magnify the note,
the sad of honest pain, the chill
blood-song, lament, confession, haunt,
as tree will sing again from root
and vein and sap and twig in wind
and cat will moan as hand plucks nerve,
picks bone and skin and gut and pricks
the heart as blood will answer blood
and love begins to knock along the grain.

New Hammock Music Video on Pitchfork.tv: “Mono No Aware”

Hammock’s newest music video for “Mono No Aware” off of Maybe They Will Sing For Us Tomorrow is up on the newly redesigned Pitchfork website.  Not surprisingly, it’s beautiful and atmospheric.  🙂  This particular song reminds me a lot of stuff by Max Richter, namely The Blue Notebooks.

Watch the video; there’s a reason why Hammock if one of my favorite bands.

William Fitzsimmons, “If You Would Come Back Home”

Just saw a link over at Pitchfork Media to a new music video from William Fitzsimmons – “If You Would Come Back Home,” directed by Josh Franer.

The song comes from Fitzsimmons’ latest record, The Sparrow and The Crow, which is excellent.  I like the video, too. If you like what you hear, consider picking up the cd or buying it online from Amazon or on iTunes.

Art I Like.

I created a new page on my blog a few weeks ago, showcasing different pieces of art that I really like and want to share, whether it be paintings, photographs, poems, or other writing.  I got the idea from a similar page on Harrison’s blog, so I thought I would implement it, too.  It’s the middle link entitled “Art” up at the top on the right.

Hope you like the things I post there as much as I do.

NoiseTrade.com – The Allens

Alright, my next recommendation off of NoiseTrade is the self-titled release by a band called The Allens.

I’d never heard of them before, but after listening to a few of their samples on NoiseTrade, I shared the album with three friends and got their free download, and I could not be more pleased.  Definitely a folk-rock / americana vibe, the female half of this husband and wife duo can sing.  The songwriting isn’t bad either.  What are you waiting for?  give them a listen, right here.
